Of Mice and Men

Original (Gary Sinise John Malkovitch version)

Rehearsal

Final

Originally I intended to film this in the theatre, under 'moonlight' with assistants. I felt that due to accessibility, the scene would be ideally filmed near a river in daylight, as it provides greater context. I had to produce this myself and also play two characters as I was unable to get any additional crew or cast. However, I enjoyed the process of filming solo, as I felt I was able to learn more about production. I also felt that it also helped my focus on quickly getting into characters. I developed techniques and used a multitude of stands to help me. It is extremely challenging filming solo, as there are so many things to remember on top of the script. However, due to the challenge, I feel I gained more than when filming blackadder for example.

The Matrix 'Humans are a virus' scene

Original (Hugo Weaving, Laurence Fishburne)

Rehearsal

Ambient Music

I found a Matrixy/New Wave/Synth/Cyber Punk sound to compliment to video. The music is not from the original scene as I wanted to use free to use sounds and new artists music. I like how the ambience sound can completely change a scene.

This scene was chosen because I felt I could achieve the style in acting and film. I found a trick where I attached a camera stand to an office chair. I was able to get the chair to turn whilst I moved past it, allowing a tracking shot whilst I was acting. I learned a lot from this scene, such as learning how to not look at the camera and remembering short scripts in a short period of time. I also played both characters which was easier (than M and M) as the Morpheus character doesn't talk in this scene. Creating this scene has provided me with a marker on how to create scenes for a show reel.

Dean Mans Shoes: 'You're their mate'. scene

Original

Dead Man Shoes is one of my favourite films. The film is pschological and plays with the mind of the audience as the characters themselves are toyed with. The main character (Richard), has returned to his home town after being in the army. Has suffers from PTSD and is suicidial. He has gone into a dark place where there is no hope no turn around. He is followed by his brother and it is gradually revealed that the brother is a fragment if Richards mind and his brother is actually dead. A group of local criminal, gangster wannabe, thugs, were involved in his death. Richard kills of each of the gang members one by one after using various techniques to cause terror and distress. The film is dark and brother provides a gateway into Richards tortured mind.

Beyond the story and film, there are other reasons for making a film. It is an independent film that was produced on a low budget.

Due to the characters, story and filming style, the film is naturalistic and the grain of the film adds character and depth. Therefore, it is an example of how to make low budget film and produce high quality films. Not being limited by what's available but instead working with the limitations or integrating them into the films style.

Use of unknown actors: The director, Shane Meadows used actors that are unknown or had no experience in acting. The lead was created for the actor, Paddy Considine. The actor was suited to this role and it enahced the profile of both the actor and director. Toby Kebbell, who plays the brother Anthony has also moved onto higher profile films. Many of the other actors were cast for roles despite having no acting experience as they were a natural fit for the role.

Rehearsal

First Take

I originally intended to re film this scene due to the wind. However, after watching the scene I felt the wind actually added something to the scene. It would be interesting to explore this scene again in future and improve the quality as I feel that Matti and I had a good balance in performance for this scene.

The Cydonia Incident - Genre: Sci- Fi Horror Punk Mystery

A short film based on a story arc involving the exploration of a remote mining outpost on Mars. The film aims to use various locations that are used to reveal the world of Mars in the 22nd century. THe story is influenced by films and TV shows such as Blade Runner, Mission to Mars Firefly and The Expanse.

First Takes/Rehearsals

The idea of this scene was to use reimagine the college student hub as an aerodrome terminal. The filming was opportunistic as their is rarely a time when the hub is quiet. I provided directions of the scene to the other actor (Matti). He would be be playing the ticket handler and the stewerd. His character is a service droid in a futuristic world. My character is a detective invesigating the incident. The truth of the character is revealed further into the story. Despite the challenges of filming, we are able to produce some useful footage that can be used in the final. I will be able to refine the scene by doing small repeats which can be edited into the film.

I was made aware of the availability of the the aircraft room in college. I considered many different ways to use the plane. For this film I am using it for a transition scene. I practiced with the camera to see what angles work best. Ideally the angles need to mask the normal parts of the room. The worms eye view is the angle I would like to explore more. I would like to add more drama into the scene such as villain trying to interfere with the mission. The aircraft could also be used for hijacking scnes, or a pre crash scene.

I decided to use a local outdoor location for the Mars surface scenes. The location seemed ideal for filming surface due to its barren look. As the trees are young, or pioneer plants, it adds to the scene as if this is a partially terraformed surface or in a contained environment. I still feel I need to add and ending to this scene and also further editing is required. As this is a restricted location I need to decide if I can go back and get close up footage of the location or use an alternative location for the final part of the scene. However, I like the scene and it contributes a lot to the story. I added some ambience sounds to the scene. I feel the sound FX contribute to the scene and provide an eerie feeling. The sound FX were also necessary due to wind. Fortunately, I was able to use the sound FX to create the depth that was lacking in the sound, such as that lost from footsteps of breaking twigs. During the scene the lighting from the sun also changed. I feel the sunlight contributed to this filming, but it is something to note in future particularly in locations that are not open or shaded by hills. This requires further editing and a scene where the character enters the building and finds whats happening.

Final

I like the effect of the locations, with background sound FX they provide a picture of the Martian world. The scenes are fluid and are gradually revealing parts of the story. The story is building towards suspense and it would be interesting to go deeper into the story. Potentially I would include various imagined and ambitious scenes and make this into the real film. As I made each scene, I was able to imagine new parts of the story, characters, locations. I imagined the Cydonia district, it would have similarities with a western town, but with 22nd century technology. There would be casinos and taverns. The area would be mainly controlled by gangsters and criminals.

'Vengence' Horror Film:

Scene 1 (Cam angle scene)

This scene was used to demonstrate a number of different angles. The aim was to try and use angles to tell a story. By angles and acting they imply the characters state of mind or situation. The Dutch angle is example of how an angle is used to show a state of mind, such as becoming paranoid or intoxicated. I also wanted to show how angles can be achieved whilst filming solo. I was able to demonstrate angles such as a 360 arc, over the shoulder and tracking shots. Long shots are important during scenes which are used to show a character is isolated or at a distance. I choose a location that was free from the public and went through the area, seeing how I create a scene. The location also had an eerie feel on the day and the overcast weather made the ambient light ideal for the scene. At each section, I decided which camera angle would be ideal. With little to no dialogue, I aimed to tell part of a story that seems like a dream state. I felt the angles worked to create a sense of paranoia. In the final, I added another scene that starts to reveal more of the story, the characters and the entity.

Final

Watching the film, there is a gradual build-up of suspense. There are quiet moments when it seems that something could happen. The locations are eerie which adds to the ambience. I would like to build upon the story, adding more characters and action in the future. I also learned many different camera angles during the process of making this film and tricks such as creating a 360 arc.

Blackadder II

Rehearsal

The Blackadder scene was chosen as we all had interest in the scene. We decided to change the script and bring it closer to the modern era. This allowed flexibility with our costume. I found the most outlandish clothes available in the wardrobe department, in order to re-adjust my character. The script dialogue was change in order to reflect the new costume. I feel we had a good balance in characters for this scene, interpreting mannerisms close to the original scene.

Final

After issues with scheduling, mainly due to illnesses, we have been able to film a full costume final version of the scene. Jamie edited the scene and made the scene more dramatic by playing with the credits. The credits and intro also make the film seem more professional.

Dirty Harry - 'do I feel lucky?' scene

I still need to come back to this. I wanted to create the scene over half term, but I felt awkward about filming the scene in public due to the use of an imitation weapon. It only takes one member of the public to see some guy talking to himself, wiling what appears to be a hand gun. This is something that needs to be considered when filming in public, especially solo. Ideally, the scene needs to be filmed outdoors. I have the costume, it just the case of scheduling. It may be suggested that if I am filming solo, I do not use scenes where imitations firearms are involved.
