Thursday 14/10/2021 Water Tank

Updated: Jan 13, 2022

The class is now focusing on refining the performance, sharing the scripts, working on props, individual performances, etc. I was able to assist the class with some collective tasks such as using the circus tent sheeting to cover the board walls. I feel I started on a high today and was ready from the off. I also inspected the other props such as Matts jack in the box, with the box retrieval making an interesting story itself (long story short retrieved from the 'sky' via a cherry picker). Jamie has constructed some signs for each performer and was also able to make effective use of UV paint. The signs have an old look to them and also good use of red paint. Most of the performers have got their acts together now and its only 1 or 2 that need to work it. I used my time in class to focus on painting and decorating my 'water tank'. I had already got the base colour but I needed to add the screen and then add some other details. I finished painting the frame by randomly brushing orange and brown onto the surface.

I attached the sheet, ensuring it was tight. I used drawing pins and staples to fasten the sheeting. I ensured it was secure enough for me to hit and press my face against. I managed to get it tight enough so it looks more like glass than it had before. I painted the inside edges of the sheet green to resemble built up algae. I painted some extra onto the bottom section of the frame. I used watered down green paint in a spray bottle to apply a misting to the screen. I worked on only the surrounding 30cm-40cm of the sheeting and left an large, central area (mostly) clear.

I applied a bloody hand print to the screen by painting my hand with a dark red paint and then pressing it on the screen. I smeared the paint downward to add effect. I also watered down some of the red paint and used of brush to splatter blood onto the screen. At this point I felt it as enough and any more would be too much. There is also potential for fake blood to be used during the performance

I set up the screen with the lighting and scattered the silky drapes on the floor. I used a blue veil with siler pattern to wrap the light. With the lighting, drapes and paintwork, it has created a very effective scene. The paint is useful for masking and also creates a tighter frame. I like how it looks bright, as it is more 'ghosty' than realistic. With lower lights and the backdrop, this will further enhance the screen. I now need to try out using fairy lights to see if this adds greater effect.

Even without makeup and darkness, I am scary. I resemble the possessed Linda Blair from 'The Exorcist' film. For the performance I am confident the scene and character I have created are intimidating and interesting in terms of visuals. I have more confidence in performance and with full costume I will be on top of my game and really into character. I am still playing with some sounds I could make, but these are very minor details as the performance is very quick. The scene is simple but has visual appeal that draws in a visitor. There is something for them to by looking at whilst I break forward. They are drawn into the viewing area and cannot hide in the background.

Ultimately, the scene has turned out how I wanted it. I didn't want it to be realistically 'perfect; but to have visual effect and a masking element. I am close to my original design and feel a sense of completion with the scenery. I have stuck to the plan and decided that I do not need to add much more detail to the tank. I can now focus on working with the set up that I have manufactured, refining the performance and details such as lighting and sound.

My aim is not just to scare, but to be remembered. I want to walk around college and hear students and staff talking of our groups performance, and even though its selfish, my own performance too. With this, I gain confidence to move forward with this performing style if I want to work in frightmare and other immersive performing styles. I like what I have created and also that I was able to take on board ideas to improve the scene.

It has been a breath of fresh air having a production team on board this year. Jess P and Sonia have done a fantastic job in getting everything together in terms of props and planning. This bulk of the wok has allowed the Performers to focus details, making full use of the materials, and individual attention to performance and props. This means that collectively, we have conjured (devised) an impressive set and some interesting, unique performances.
